“A Phoney Rome for Lazy Tourist?” …

“Dear Prof. Muratore, The New York Times published a new
article on the problem of touists in Rome, ” Rome Welcomes
Tourism Con Brio, but Not Too Much.” NEW YORK TIMES
(26-07-2007 Online Edition).
I made the full text article available in my image
collection which shows the overwhelming array of the
venders throughout Rome selling junk to the tourists of
Rome, etc., entitled:
Dear Minister Rutelli & Mayor Veltroni, There is not enough
funding to care for the ruins of Rome? But, there is funding
to make Rome “A Phoney Rome For Lazy Tourist.“?I am a freelance researcher in Washington DC, USA that
specializes in the Modern History of the Urban and
Archaeological Transformation of the Imperial Fora of Rome,
from the Fascist era to the Present (The Metro C Project in
Rome).
“ROME – THE IMPERIAL FORA.
The Documentation and Dissemination of the Recent
Archaeological Investigations and Related Studies conducted
in the Imperial Fora of Rome from 1995– 2007.
[Forthcoming]”
I am creating an online digital image collection and
database which documents in detail the archaeological and
urban planning project for the Imperial Fora.
I am familiar with your interest in the architecture of
Rome from the few interviews I read about you as published
in the recent various Italian newspapers (courtesy of the
MIBAC – Rassegna Stampa) and the International English
newspapers. For example: Alessandro Rizzo, After decades of
obivion, Fascist architecture gians new favor. Associated
Press (01-10-2003), the Exhibit “Metafisica”,
“Until the 1970s, it [Fascist architecture] was considered
a dark page in history of Italian architecture,” said
Giorgio Muratore, an architecture history professor.
“Today, after more then 50 years, we can look at things
from a distance. Something of high-quality – even if it was
born in a questionable period – can still be interesting.”
I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to let your
readers on your blog archiwatch, know that my new image
collection and database regarding the Imperial Fora is
available also on flickr!

Thank you”

  1. Martin G. Conde ha detto:

“…Currently in both cities [Athens & Rome] the monumental public spaces and examples of archaeology are entrusted to the dominant fruition of cosmopolitan tourism, placing their original national and nationalistic functions on a secondary level.”

~ Dott. Vittorio Vidotto [Rome], (2007).*

After nearly three years (2004-2007) the administration of the City of Rome and the Superintendency of Archaeology in Rome is finally [lets hope something productive will come from this] after three years going to address the problems of the areas Piazza of Venice, The Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Piazza of the Colosseum that have now been over ran by “L’ Invasione degli ambulati … Souvenir e Chioso” [Map = La Repubblica 21.08.2007 pg. 2]…!

While this is a short term solution too many of the over all urban and archaeological problems confronting the City of Rome of really transforming the central archaeological area of Rome (Campidoglio, Roman and Imperial Fora and the Colosseum valley) into an one of the worlds greatest archaeological parks. I would hope contemporary scholars & students (architects, urban planners, and archaeologists) in Rome would be more willing to confront the political administrations of both the City of Rome and the Italian Ministry of Culture which have delayed and neglected the important issues of protecting Rome cultural heritage for too long in the past.

    Thank you
