L’ORIGINE … DEL MONDO …

Oscar Niemeyer

People (L) watch the storm over Rio de Janeiro from the Contemporary Art Museum, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, in Niteroi, a city 25 km from Rio just across Guanabara Bay, on April 9, 2010. The unusual roughness seen these days in the bay is according to experts, caused by the same climate phenomenon that originated the heaviest rains in half a century that since Monday unleashed the floods and mudslides which killed an estimate of 380 people in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Rescuers resumed on Friday a grim search through a wall of mud with hopes fading of finding survivors as more than 380 people are now feared to have died in Brazil’s worst rains in decades.
